Classroom Learning Environments
Whitfield State School is set across a large, established campus with a diverse range of spaces designed to support learning, collaboration, intervention, inclusion and student wellbeing.
Our general classrooms are welcoming, well-resourced learning environments designed to support high-quality teaching and our school-wide focus on Belonging, Engagement and Agency. Classroom environments support explicit teaching and learning consolidation, while also providing opportunities for discussion, collaboration, problem-solving and increasingly independent learning.
Across the school, students have access to a variety of specialist and purpose-designed learning spaces, including areas for Japanese, Digital Technologies, Physical Education, Music, Dance and Drama as well as other specialist programs. Flexible teaching spaces allow learning to occur in different configurations, from whole-class instruction through to small-group and individual learning.
We also provide a range of intervention, inclusion and Student Services spaces. These enable teachers, support staff and specialist personnel to provide targeted teaching and individualised support, helping us respond to the diverse academic, developmental, social and emotional needs of our students.
Our youngest learners benefit from environments designed specifically for the early years, with access to indoor and outdoor spaces that encourage movement, exploration, play and hands-on learning. As students progress through the school, learning environments increasingly support independence, collaboration and responsibility for learning.
Importantly, learning at Whitfield is not confined to four classroom walls. Our classrooms connect with covered areas, gardens, outdoor learning environments, sporting facilities, play spaces and natural areas, allowing teachers to select the environment that best supports the learning taking place.
Together, these spaces help us create an environment where children can feel connected, experience success and receive the support they need to reach their potential.
School grounds - play and learning
One of Whitfield State School's distinctive features is our large, green tropical campus. Our extensive grounds provide children with space to move, play, explore, compete, create and learn outdoors.
The school includes large, grassed areas and ovals, sporting and activity spaces, playgrounds, covered areas, shaded spaces, gardens and established tropical vegetation. These environments support Physical Education, school sport, gross-motor development, outdoor learning and the many informal games and activities that are an important part of primary school life.
Different areas of the school have been developed to provide children with different types of play and challenge. Traditional playground equipment sits alongside nature play, loose-parts play and more open-ended environments, giving children opportunities to climb, build, invent, create, negotiate and solve problems.
Our Naturopolis rainforest play environment draws on Whitfield's unique tropical setting and gives children opportunities to explore and interact with the natural world. Gardens, trees and natural areas across the campus also create quieter spaces and opportunities for environmental and curriculum learning.
Outdoor areas are regularly used as learning spaces, allowing teachers to take curriculum learning beyond the classroom for investigation, observation, practical activities, discussion and collaborative learning.
We also believe children benefit from experiencing appropriate challenge and managed risk. Learning to assess situations, make decisions, test ideas, resolve disagreements and try again when something doesn't work are important parts of becoming capable and independent.
Our grounds are therefore much more than places children spend their breaks. They are an important part of how we develop healthy, confident, resilient and skilled problem solvers.
CAWMPEF – Covered All Weather Multi-Purpose Education Facility
Our CAWMPEF is one of Whitfield State School's largest and most versatile spaces, providing a huge, covered environment for sport, learning, performances, gatherings and community activities throughout the year.
The facility features a full-sized basketball court with a painted concrete playing surface, high roof, large industrial fans and open mesh sides. Its design provides protection from the tropical sun and rain while maintaining airflow—particularly important in the Far North Queensland climate.
Throughout the school week, the CAWMPEF supports Physical Education, basketball and other sports, games, training, competitions and large-group activities. Its size also makes it an important gathering place for our school community, hosting assemblies, presentations, performances, celebrations, special events and interschool competitions.
It is another example of the range of spaces at Whitfield that allow children to participate, connect, challenge themselves and experience success beyond the traditional classroom.
