At Whitfield State School, the performing arts are an important part of our World of Opportunities, helping children discover their strengths, build confidence, connect with others and experience the pride that comes from working towards something challenging and worthwhile.
Our new Performing Arts and Music Centre will provide a purpose-built home for this work and significantly expand what is possible for our students, families and wider community.
The centre will support learning across Music, Instrumental Music, Dance and Drama, as well as our PEAK Academies, ensembles, choirs, clubs, rehearsals, showcases, school musicals, presentations and major celebrations. Performance-grade facilities will give students authentic opportunities to learn, rehearse and perform in an environment designed for the arts.
Importantly, the centre is for every child, not simply those who already see themselves as performers. Performing arts experiences provide powerful opportunities to develop communication, creativity, collaboration, confidence, self-regulation and the resilience to practise, receive feedback, improve and perform in front of others. These are important capabilities in our goal of developing Resilient, Skilled Problem Solvers.
A Home for our Whitfield family
We have always imagined our centre as the “Home of Performing Arts" at Whitfield—a place where our community comes together. A place for every family to celebrate their children.
Families are an essential part of our performing arts culture. In our school, parents, grandparents and friends fill audiences, support rehearsals, celebrate achievement and encourage children to participate. The new centre will provide a dedicated place where our community can gather to share these experiences and celebrate children striving for their peak.
The facility will also create opportunities beyond the school gate. Designed to support broader community access, it has the potential to host local performing arts, cultural, sporting and community groups and strengthen Whitfield State School's connections with the communities surrounding our school.
Ultimately, this is more than a performing arts facility. It is an investment in a place where children can discover what they are capable of and where the Whitfield family can come together to celebrate it.
Progress Updates
The school has received and had confirmed a government election commitment for a 480 seat Performing Arts and Music Centre. Hutchinson builders has been appointed to construct the centre.
Progress updates will continue to be provided through the school's newsletter and at Parent's and Citizen's Association (P&C) meetings.
