The Australian Curriculum sets
expectations for what all Australian students should be taught. In Literacy and
Numeracy, Whitfield State School teachers use the explicit teaching framework
and consolidations. When teachers teach this way, student results improve and
student success fosters self-confidence and enjoyment of schooling.
In
the first part of each lesson, the teacher explains what to do in a clear,
step-by-step fashion and demonstrates how to do it. Then the teacher and
students follow these steps together, with lots of practice in between, and with
the teacher continually checking for student understanding. Finally, students
independently complete carefully chosen practice activities.
Prior to all explicit lessons,
students are engaged with consolidations to practise and apply knowledge and
skills. Knowledge is moved from short term to long term memory.
