Whitfield State School provides students with access to a range of digital technologies through dedicated computer labs, classroom technology and specialist Digital Technologies learning.
Our computer labs provide dedicated environments where whole classes can access technology at the same time. These spaces allow for the explicit teaching of important digital skills including keyboarding, document creation, publishing, presentations, research, digital production and the effective use of educational software and online learning tools.
Technology is also available within general classrooms, allowing teachers and students to use digital tools as part of everyday learning when they add value. Classroom teachers have access to shared class sets of laptops and tablet devices that they use in general classrooms to develop students' practical technology capabilities, including the skills needed to research, create, communicate, publish and produce high-quality work.
Inside our Imaginarium and through our Digital Technologies program, students move beyond simply using devices. They develop computational thinking and learn about digital systems, data, coding, design and the creation of digital solutions. They build and code simple robots and undertake other makerspace activities. Students are encouraged to see technology as a tool for creating and problem-solving, rather than simply consuming information.
Our approach to technology is deliberately balanced. Digital learning sits alongside books, handwriting, explicit teaching, conversation, practical experiences, creativity, physical activity, outdoor learning and play. We use technology when it is the right tool for the learning taking place.
Our goal is not simply to develop children who know how to operate devices. We want students to become capable, safe, responsible and discerning users of technology who understand when, why and how digital tools can help them learn, communicate, create and solve problems.
