Music at Whitfield
Music is an important part of learning and school life at Whitfield State School. Through classroom music, choirs, instrumental music and performance opportunities, students develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of music. Our program provides a supportive and engaging environment in which students learn to sing, play, compose and perform, while developing teamwork, persistence and a strong sense of belonging.
Music is taught as part of The Arts in the Australian Curriculum, with students learning to create, perform and respond to music. At our school we use the Kodály approach, a carefully sequenced and highly engaging method in which students learn musical concepts through singing, movement, listening and games. Beginning with the voice as every child's natural instrument, students progressively develop their understanding of rhythm, pitch, notation and musical expression. This approach builds strong musical foundations through active, joyful and developmentally appropriate learning.
Elements of Music at Whitfield State School
Music Specialist program – Classroom specialist lessons for every student, every week, every year. Students learn Music as part of the Australian Curriculum and this subject is assessed and reported against these standards.
Choir – Weekly lunchtime choir program for those younger students and older students interested in singing. This program includes between 20 and 60 children.
Peak Music Academy – With twice weekly practice and instruction sessions during lunch and class time, our Peak Music Academy, includes up to 60 children in music excellence learning. These students participate in both composing and performing music physically and electronically
Instrumental Music – Starting in grade 3 for the strings program and grade 4 for the woodwind, brass and percussion programs, students learn to play a wide selection of instruments via instruction from specialised instrumental teachers in weekly small group lessons. Students then have weekly practice or performance in either whole school and/or junior and senior ensembles and bands. Instruments can be hired from the school for the first year of learning. Larger / more expensive instruments can be hired from the school for every year of instruction.
