Japanese at Whitfield
At Whitfield State School, students learn Japanese from year 3 onwards through engaging experiences that develop communication skills and an appreciation of Japanese language and culture. Through speaking, listening, reading, writing, games and cultural activities, students build confidence in using another language while developing curiosity, respect and a broader understanding of the world.
Language is taught as part of the Australian Curriculum. Students learn to communicate in another language while exploring how language, culture and identity are connected. Through practical and purposeful learning, they develop intercultural understanding, flexible thinking and an appreciation of different perspectives. At Whitfield we believe that this is an important capability for participating in an increasingly connected world.
Elements of Japanese Learning at Whitfield State School
Japanese Specialist program – Weekly classroom specialist lessons for 6 months or 12 months of every year for every student in years 3 -6. Students learn Japanese as part of the Australian Curriculum and this subject is assessed and reported against these standards.
Peak Languages Academy – With weekly practice and instruction sessions during lunch and class time, our Peak Languages Academy, includes up to 30 children in Japanese excellence learning. This program provides learning for both native and second language learners. In addition to quality cultural experiences children also compete in speaking and other competitions.
