To be considered for student leadership at Whitfield State School, all interested students are required to complete a leadership card during year five where they are expected to have certain tasks accomplished and signed either by teachers or people in the community. Tasks can include such things as:-
- helping a fellow student or teacher
- completing assignments on time
- participating in a charity in the wider community.
The leadership cards are collected in 4th term and a list of potential students short-listed. This list is achieved through consultation between all upper school teachers and specialists. The year 5/6 students have the privilege of voting for the top four student leaders.
In February the following year, the student leaders are presented with their badges by their parents on assembly. This special occasion is preceded by a morning tea for family and staff.
The student leaders, with the assistance of their student council then spend the school year working towards implementing and accomplishing their "Action Plan".
